A Study on Physical Therapists¢¥ Knowledge, Prejudice and Social Interaction of AIDS

Abstract
As the increase in the number of AIDS patients worldwide, a tendency to increase in their numbers is also visible in Korea. Despite the fact that AIDS patients can be cured or treated functionally by physical therapists, many of them are not willing to treat AIDS patients¢¥ in
reality due to their prejudice, uneasiness and vague thoughts of contamination related with AIDS treatments. Through this study, We find that it is so vital and necessary to introduce a formal and systematic education to physical therapy students by establishing a course on
AIDS. By studying the course, they will enlighten their knowledge about AIDS, and be able to achieve and perform curing or treating the patients with more positive and humanistic attitudes in curing AIDS patients. Keeping that in mind, the survey was conducted on physical
therapists that are currently working in general hospitals, hospitals, medical clinics, and rehabilitation centers in Seoul and other national capital regions from May 1 to May 6, 1999.
The intention of this study / survey was explained to them on the phone, then the survey questionnaires were distributed, and 209 answered questionnaires were collected and used for this study. The implement of the study consisted of 11 special questions and 25 questions on
general characteristics and degree of knowledge that were amended by Miyoung Park (1997) and Chunyoung Jun (1988). Besides, 10 questions on degree of prejudice and 6 possibilities of social interaction questions used are from the amended Miyoung Park (1997) and Kelly (1988).
The data were analyzed by SAS utilizing real number, percentage, standard deviation F-test,
Pearson correlation coefficient, ANOVA.
The results of the study were as follows
1. The major age group of the subjects/physical therapists/surveyors was between 26 to 30 years reaching 42.8%, aged over 36 year was 22.1% and aged under 25 years was 13.5%. Amongst them, 81.8% have not had any official learning experience of AIDS and 99.5% answered yes to their needs of AIDS education, The rate of confidence in treating AIDS patients reached 66.3% with no confidence, 26.0% with some confidence, and only 7.7% had full confidence.
2. The degree of their knowledge about AIDS was 18.34 points on an average, which wasn¢¥t much different to students¢¥ degree of knowledge points.
3. There were no significant differences of the subjects statistically, between their general characteristics and the degree of knowledge.
4. For the degree of general characteristics and prejudice, the confidence in treating AIDS patients had probability of (F=9.67, P<0.0021) which shows significant differences statistically. In subjects prejudice points, prejudice rated from the highest 18 points to the lowest 42 points where 62.0% rated with an average of 32 points.
5. The possibility of social interaction, over 6 out of 6 questions was 5.31%, with no possibility was 1.93%, and 62.3% showed little possibility(15-23 points) where the highest point for the possibility of social interaction was 6 points and the lowest of 30 points. As for the general characteristics and the possibility of social interactions, the possibility of social interaction probability rate(F=9.76, P<0.0001)question and the rate of confidence in general characteristics had significant differences statistically.
6. The degree of prejudies and social interaction probability about AIDS patients had significant correlations statistically(r=-0.4064, p=0.0001).
